Remember the Summer of 1998, when the film Armageddon was playing at your local movieplex?? As an 18 year old girl, I thought the movie was great - it had humor, it had an asteroid, it even had dreamy Ben Affleck before he got all bloated and gross. But as I sat at Main Street Theatre in Sauk Centre, MN, swooning over Senor Affleck, I couldn't help thinking, "Haven't I seen this movie before?" In fact, I had already seen it....about two months earlier....and it was called Deep Impact.
This fall, Minnesotans have gone through a similar deja vu experience. Unfortunately, this deja vu did not come in the form of a Jerry Bruckheimer produced summer blockbuster staring Bruce Willis, Steve Buscemi and an asteroid. (And no, it's not THAT Deja Vu either) What I'm talking about, obviously, is the 2nd implosion of the Vikings at the hands of NFL Bad Boy/Prima Donna/Spoiled Brat Randy Moss.
Basically, this is how the story went both times around. The Vikings acquire the next great hope in the form of #84, Phenom Wide Receiver, Randy Moss. When times are good, and the team is winning, Moss is like a dream come true. He's cordial to fans and the press. He makes amazing superhuman plays and his teammates look all the more talented. (cough, Daunte Culpepper, cough, cough) But, on the flip side, when the Vikes start losing, Moss' behavior goes from angelic to awful. I mean, we all remember Moss fake mooning the fans in Green Bay and wiping his ass on the goal post during the 2005 playoffs.

We also get gems like this:

And...yada, yada, yada....Moss is released from his contract and the Vikings' offense is left with its 41-year old, flaccid junk in its hands. (ALLEGEDLY)
With Monday's release of Moss, Minnesotans felt depressed, angry, frustrated but not terribly surprised. I mean, this is Randy Moss we're talking about - every person in the state of Minnesota knew what we were getting when the Vikes reacquired Moss. And frankly, the team should have known better. In short, I believe the expression is "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
Let's just hope the Vikings have learned their lesson....
