A few weekends back, I had the pleasure of introducing Flav and our law school friend Alexandra to a real life Big 10 Homecoming Game!!! Unfortunately for them, said Big 10 game featured my alma matter, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, arguably the most sorry football team in history of the NCAA.
For those of you who do not follow College Football, Minnesota has been in a perpetual "rebuilding phase" since basically...forever. A year before I started college, the Gophers brought on coach Glenn Mason, and under his leadership they were okay by Big 10 standards - they usually finished in the middle of the pack in conference play and even made it to a few bowl games. Then, in 2007, Mason was kicked to the curb and the Gopher's hired coach Tim Brewster, who promptly drove the mediocre Gophers straight into the ground. But hey, for better or worse I'm an alumnus the University of Minnesota (or "The U" as it's known in Minnesota) so the Gophers are my team.
And, like a proper alum and friend of an alum, Alexandra and I got decked out in Gopher Gear!!
And because it was Homecoming, there were lots of fans to cheer on the U's football team.

Since Flav was not so enthusiastic about cheering on my Alma matter, so he decided to roll up to the game "Unabomber Style."

Because this was my first Gopher Football Game since I was a student at the U, it was my first chance to see the Gophers in action at the brand spankin new TCF Stadium. Let's just say - the stadium, impressive; the team, not so much...as in, my high school JV football team had more sophisticated play calling.

On the bright side, at least they sold fried cheese curds at the concession stands.

Yet, despite the gawd awful coaching and predictable play calling, the Gophers managed to hold a lead for most of the game......only to lose said lead with 2 min left in the game. (wahh, wahhhhh) And after the last Gopher offensive drive was stopped with a last second interception by Northwestern, the game ended as most Gopher games do, with a mass exodus of Gopher fans chanting "Fire Brewster"!!!

Fortunately, we were able to drown our sorrows over the lost game in cheap beer from Sally's, a divey campus bar with a liberal fake ID policy. Needless to say, we took advantage of the $6 pitchers.
