Flaviana Blog Editorial - Gay Weddings Are Awesome

Hey Everyone.  So, it's been a while since I've made an entry into the ol' bloggorino.  Mostly because we've had a crazy couple of months - new house, suffering through a heat wave with no A/C (more on that later) and lots of summer events.

Annnddd, speaking of summer events, this past weekend, for the third time in my life, I donned a dress that had been picked out by someone else, carried a bouquet of flowers and walked down the aisle as a bridesmaid in a wedding.  But this wasn't just any wedding.  It was a celebration of my brother's Phillip's marriage to Aaron, his partner of 3+ years.  And like any event planned by my mother, this was the event of the decade!!

Now, before I go any further, it's probably best to address the elephant in the room.  See, I've heard a few rumors that there are still people in this world who think being gay is a choice.  Even worse, they believe those who "chose" to be gay have opted to live a life of sin in defiance of nature.  AND they even think its OK to call gay people terrible names which I will not repeat (this is a family blog after all) and treat them like they are less than human.  Can you believe it???  Me neither.  Kind of reminds you of your grandparents making random racist comments without a blink of an eye, no?

Well, random people who think being gay is a choice, I have some bad news for you.  It's not.  And, no, this isn't my opinion.  It is an objective fact.  And how do I know this?  Because, between the ages of 3 to 18, I lived with a gay guy...when he was a little kid.  And to those who think it's impossible for a little kid to be gay, riddle me this - how many 5 y/o little boys do you know who reenact Madonna's video of "Like a Prayer"?  Yeah, that's what I thought...

Basically, to recap, being gay = not a choice.  Moving on....

Anyway, back to the wedding.  Now, much to the horror of my mother and brother-in-law who spent months planning this event, the best adjective I can think of to describe my brother's wedding is "normal."  Not to say that the event wasn't a beautiful incredible spectacular of a wedding.  What I mean to say in describing the wedding as "normal" is that it was remarkably similar to pretty much every other wedding I've attended - the bridesmaids wore matching gowns; the men wore rented tuxes; pictures were taken of the wedding party and the couple's respective families; there were lots of beautiful flowers; women teared up during the ceremony as the couple exchanged their vows; passed hors d'oeuvres were eaten during the cocktail reception; lovely toasts were made praising the couple and wishing them well; and there was even a creepy uncle who was inappropriately drunk.  So if you're nervous about attending a gay wedding, don't be - it will basically be like every other wedding you've been to, just with better dance music.  And, no Michele Bachmann, not a single person was swallowed whole into the fires of hell, so THERE!!!

Now, all of this normalcy business aside, around 11:45 the event morphed (with a splash, heh, heh) from "beautiful and fun outdoor wedding" to "best wedding ever".  Allow me to set the scene.  The wedding was held at my parent's house, which has a lovely back yard complete with a large swimming pool.  Around 11:45, as the remaining guests were dancing the night away, we all heard a splash as my mom, her friend Sandy and Aaron's friend Matt jumped into the pool with all of their clothes on.  As soon as I saw my mom in the pool, I followed suit and dove into the pool in my bridesmaid dress.  Next thing we knew, pretty much every guest - including the grooms, my mom's friends, Aaron's sisters and brother and my aunt, uncle and adult cousins - had jumped into the pool with their clothes on leading to a crazy pool dance party only seen in Smirnoff Ice Commercials and Club MTV Spring Break circa 1988.  My dad even walked into the pool with his full tux on - including his shoes!!

Needless to say, IT - WAS - AWESOME!!!

To give you an idea of exactly HOW awesome it was, enjoy these pics courtesy of my cousin, Kelly:

Hopefully the lady who rented us the tuxes doesn't notice the chlorine smell on the suits....Whoopsie:)

Congrats again to Phil & Aaron!!!  Have a great time on your honeymoon in Mexico!!
